Olivier is great. Tudor propoganda never looked so good. Hamlet, Prince of Denmark, returns home to find his father murdered and his mother remarrying the murderer, his uncle. But jealousy and resentment cause Richard to seek the crown for himself, and he conceives a lengthy and carefully calculated plan using deception, manipulation, and outright murder to achieve his goal. Brings back memories of first seeing it on a preteen school group trip to the cinema.

Ian McKellen is great in the titular role and is the main reason why I rate the film up; none of the other performances makes much of an impression. Richard III - Digital Remastered Bloom thought Sir Ian McKellen was the greatest Richard III he had ever seen, and Richard Loncraine's 1995 film is based on McKellen's famous 1990 National Theater performance . Richard III can be one of Shakespeare's most entertaining plays when it is done well, and this version does full justice to this classic play. The 1955 movie is a classic, and well worth watching.

As it was unscripted - although the protagonists worked from notes - there was real determination and anger in the adversarial setting, with a particularly withering performance from they then-young David Starkey ragging the lawyers.
The exhumation showed it to be true - only Richard's scoliosis of the spine went sideways, and could be disguised under clothing and armour.

It is regrettable that,whatever the reason, Olivier never directed another Shakespearean film (he planned at least one I would have been interested in - CORIOLANUS - which never got beyond the stage production).
