Harsh black metal is combined with mellower folk metal and elements of more experimental and avant garde styles. Sweden, along with the other Scandinavian countries, and UK, USA, and Italy has been for a very, very long time a prime source for great progressive music.
Tom S. Englund has one of the best voices in metal, their videos are beautifully shot, and they put on a great live show. Sheesh…Come on, most of these bands are not progressive, they’re metal or at least hardrockers (or that crazy anomaly “prog metal”, whatever that is), Evergrey, Meshuggah, Vintersorg, Freak Kitchen, Wolverine and so on. Also you mention Landberk but don’t include them…they should be right up in the top 10 as well.
I’m not sure what are they up to when it comes to new music, but over the last few years they were mostly active live.
Swedish lyrics eventually gave way to English ones, although 2007's "Solens Rötter" saw the band return to its roots. All healthy discussion so long as people stay respectful. In a country where melodic death metal reigns supreme, it may seem unusual to rank a largely progressive metal group like Evergrey so highly. Best regards, JohnI guess they didn’t include it because “and they should have at least five studio albums released.” :/Anglagard released three studio albums, and according to this post, in consideration were taken bands that have at least FIVE studio albums.Anglagard is a great band, but for this post only bands with at least five studio albums were considered, and because of that Anglagard is not included.Any list of Swedish prog omitting Anglagard is a crime…Granted they’ve only released three studio albums, but what they lack in quantity is more than balanced by the quality and sheer intensity of their work….Wobbler would have been nice to see here too….In that case, there would be hundreds of other bands that could make the list, even if they released just one album.I have to admit I missed the qualifications in the original post, (so I now understand why the excellent Landberk were also not included).
