If he holds onto it by holding special, it's fairly trivial to avoid hitting the grenade, and if he drops it to hold it as an item, his attack options are much more limited and you no longer need to worry about it exploding on hit.

Actually I do, most of this seemingly is basing off the fact that Ike just seems to be some big slow heavy weight with little movement and horrid attacks.
